The pandemic continues even though vaccination programs are accelerating at an impressive rate. It may take more than three years to vaccinate the world, and so we will not be returning to “normal” soon, there may be a “new normal”. When the pandemic struck, companies had to abandon their budgets based on simple models of consistent growth to respond to the crisis with new innovations and dynamism. Organizations in different industries and of different sizes proved to be remarkably flexible and resourceful. We need to preserve some of this spirit to prosper in the new world that is emerging from the aftermath of the pandemic and also to get us back onto our strategic track.

The new post-pandemic world will require new thinking about budgets and budgeting practices. We need budgets and budgeting practices that:

  • Keep us on our strategic track, with a strategic focus
  • Promote innovation
  • Make us more flexible and responsive to change
  • Involve and Empower our people
  • Motivate our people
  • Deliver superior performance for our organization
